The Timeless Patience of God
God’s patience today is as enduring and unchanging as it has always been. But how does He demonstrate this patience in our time? When we listen to His Word and the Holy Spirit, we see that His patience is revealed in ways that mirror His dealings with humanity throughout history. Just as God showed patience to the Gentiles through the disobedience of Israel, He continues to weave His purposes into the fabric of humanity, even through our pride and shortcomings.
How do we know this?
Paul explains in Romans 11:11 how Israel’s disobedience created an opportunity for the gospel to reach the Gentiles. From Adam to Abraham, from David to Jesus, and through the early church to today, God’s sovereign plan has always advanced, even through human failure. The Old Testament provides countless examples of how God orchestrates history to fulfill His redemptive purpose, and that same sovereignty is at work now.
God’s Patience Through Believers’ Disobedience
In our time, we see God’s patience demonstrated through the disobedience of believers. Why do I say this? Paul frequently addresses this reality in his letters, particularly in Romans and Corinthians. He echoes the words of Jesus, who lamented that “the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Matthew 9:37). Paul often struggled to find others who would faithfully carry out the mission of Christ because many were living for their own desires rather than the call of the gospel.

This disobedience, while never approved by God, becomes a platform through which His patience is displayed. Just as Israel’s disobedience became a means for the Gentiles to receive the gospel, today God uses the shortcomings of His people to extend time for the unbelieving world to come to Him. However, this does not excuse disobedience. It is still sin, and it hinders fellowship with God (1 John 1:6-7).
The Urgency of the Mission
This truth highlights the urgency of the believer’s mission in Christ. God is patient, but His patience should never be mistaken for indifference. Believers who fail to live out their calling to proclaim the gospel are walking in disobedience. While God can and does use such failings for His purposes, those who neglect their calling will be held accountable for their actions (2 Corinthians 5:10).
For those who genuinely love Jesus and maintain a vibrant relationship with Him, this reality should stir their hearts. God invites His people to be active participants in His redemptive work, to experience the joy of advancing His kingdom and the privilege of sharing His truth. The mission is urgent because every day of delay is an opportunity missed to reach those who need salvation.
The patience of God in waiting for us to come to Him is a love that no earthly father could ever fully portray.
A Call to Action
Believers who are not living out their calling should reflect deeply on what this reveals about their devotion to Christ. God, in His patience, gives His people time to proclaim the gospel, even as He sovereignly works through human failings to fulfill His purposes. But this time is not unlimited, and disobedience is not without consequences.
As Paul reminds Timothy, there are believers who live in unfaithfulness, ashamed of the gospel and unwilling to trade their own comfort for the eternal comfort of others (2 Timothy 2:13). While such disobedience does not nullify salvation, it reveals a heart that has misplaced its priorities.
Let us not rely on the disobedience of others to advance the gospel but instead step boldly into our calling. God’s patience is a gift, not to be taken lightly but to be embraced with gratitude and urgency. As we walk in obedience, we demonstrate our love for Christ, grow in fellowship with Him, and participate in the great mission of drawing others into His kingdom.
Conclusion
The patience of God is a profound demonstration of His love, sovereignty, and mercy. It offers hope for the unbeliever and opportunity for the believer. But this patience also calls for action. Let us not squander the time God has given us but faithfully live out our calling, trusting in His power to work through us for His glory.
